Virginia Anderson Ables
November 8, 1912 – July 16, 2013
Virginia Anderson Ables Mason, Michigan Virginia Anderson Ables died peacefully in Burcham Hills Retirement Community, East Lansing, Michigan, on July 16, 2013, at the age of 100. She was the youngest of five daughters of the Reverend Mr. Charles Chesterman Anderson, a Presbyterian minister, and Bernice Fairbairn Anderson, a teacher. She was the widow of Grover Ables, a teacher and writer. She was a graduate of Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she earned a B.A. degree, and Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, where she earned a M.A. degree. In Savannah, Georgia, she held a position in the Office of the Counsel, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 40 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and a Sunday school teacher. In Savannah, in 1959, her husband died and was interred there. After her retirement she lived for two years in Nashville, Tennessee, where she was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Subsequently, she lived for 15 years in Mason, Michigan, and six years in Burcham Hills Retirement Community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mason for 21 years. She was a longtime member of the American Association of University Women. In Mason, she was also a member of the Friends of the Library, the College Club, and the Mason Historical Society. Virginia Ables is survived by her niece, K. Elizabeth Atkinson of Mason, Michigan; her nephews, Dr. William B. Hood, Jr. of Seattle, Washington, Charles A. Beziat of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Richard F. Beziat of Nashville, Tennessee; as well by many great-nieces and great-nephews and their children. A Memorial Service with the Rev. Dr. W. Fred Graham officiating will be held Saturday, August 10 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church of Mason, 131 East Maple Street, Mason, Michigan 48854. Visitation with the family will take place at the Church one hour prior to the Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Virginia’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Mason. On-line condolences may be made at www.grbdmason.com

I met Virginia while working at Burcham Hills she enjoyed eating cookies and drinking coke with me. She was a great person and she will be greatly missed!
