Rozener relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, and her brother, Steven, introduced her to a handsome young man named John Thomas Matthews. Rozener and Johnny united in love. He was her devoted husband for over seventy years until his death on May 2, 2015.
Rozener accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. She served as a member of the Usher’s Board at New Salem Baptist Church on Fourth Street and later joined Full Gospel Tabernacle and served as a member of the Mother’s Board.
Rozener was a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker, who spread her love for Jesus throughout her family. She celebrated the goodness of God with unrelenting fervor in word and in deed.
Frequently she would profess to whomever she encountered her adoration for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family looked forward to the grand feasts she would prepare on Sundays and every holiday. She made the world’s best banana pudding, perfectly seasoned greens, and turkey and dressing that deserved an award. With a servant’s heart, she welcomed all to her table.
On July 30, 2020, Rozener Matthews’ earthly journey ended as she transitioned to her heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Thomas Matthews, seven brothers, and two sisters.
Rozener leaves to cherish her love and memory, her first-born son, John Henry McGrone. From her lifelong union to John Thomas Matthews, she leaves to cherish her love and memory, Yvonne (Carl) Beale, Nathaniel (Nancy) Matthews, Rosemma (JC) Matthews, Melvin Matthews, and Timothy Matthews; twelve loving grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
