Mary Estella Larimer
March 24, 1928 – June 4, 2021
Mary Estella Larimer, at 93 years young, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend passed away with her family beside her on June 4, 2021. Born March 24, 1928 to Grady and Rebeca Anderson in Manchester, TN. She was born in the same town as her father. Estella as she was known by was the eldest of the children. After Estella was her brother Edsel Anderson (Deceased), Alice Daniel (Deceased) and Josephine Thomsen (Deceased). She attended John Muir School as well as Merced Colony School. Her Jobs in Merced included working at Kings X Ice Cream Parlor (Yes, that is what they were called back then), J.J. Newberry’s and the original Merced Theater for 7 years. With all the knowledge that mom had, you would not have known that she only had a 10th grade education, only quitting school due to an illness. Meeting one of her brother’s friends, Darrell, she became Mrs. Darrell Larimer on April 18, 1953. They were together for 59 years, until his passing June 19, 2012. Together they had 3 children. After children, she did her fair share of the duties. Not only being a great housekeeper, she was a seamstress and an excellent ironer and for several years had a large clientele. She also enjoyed interior decorating and was very adept at draperies. She made the best the best fried chicken and rice pilaf and she loved decorating for Christmas! Estella enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and 1 great grandson. She loved caramel and going to casinos with dad and their best friends, Johnnie and Rosie Rocha and to say she loved to shop would be an understatement! After dad died and she was no longer driving, she would depend on one of us to take her shopping, whether it was Pier 1, Chico’s and even Gottschalks, when it was still around. She loved to buy new items for herself and the home, but if you were the lucky one to take her, she always made sure you got fed. She loved Chinese food, Mexican food and “Joe On the Go”! Estella’s favorite pastime was watching golf, the S.F. Giants, her favorite player was Brandon Crawford, (Great Choice), Hallmark Channel, Judge Judy, the Golden Girls and any remodeling show! Another pastime she had was flowers, whether inside or out. She’s the only person I know that can have and keep Orchids alive! Her other interest was watching both her sons, grandson and great grandson race. As a family, we spent many nights at the Merced Speedway as well as other tracks! Estella is survived by her 3 children, Scott (Pam), Gary (Pam), and Darylin (Linda); her 3 grandchildren, Ryan (Stacy), Alysun (Robert) and Garrett. Also surviving her is her great grandson that she adored, Aiden Larimer and several nephews and 1 niece. Estella will be buried at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, Ca. alongside her husband, Darrell Larimer. This will be a private burial. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Park Merced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hinds Hospice of Merced or to a charity of your choice.
