Kyle loved music. He taught himself to play the guitar; he was left handed and started out playing his mother’s guitar upside down. He never read music but had the ability to play a song after hearing it. The family remembers times when they would all get together and play music (guitar, drums, piano and vocals). He was on his way to becoming an Engineer and had been attending community college to get his prerequisites for enrollment in the Robotics program at Arizona State University. Kyle was a math tutor at Glendale Community College. He helped others with classes he hadn’t ever taken but could simply look at the textbooks and figure out how it worked. He had a knack for being able to get through to students who otherwise could not get a grasp of the course. Students would specifically request Kyle as their tutor. Several students thanked him for being the only one that could help them. They thought they were not smart enough to understand, until they met Kyle.
His family refers to him as “Rocket Man” because he loved rockets. Kyle enjoyed building rockets and shooting them off in the desert (by building we mean mixing the propellant for the engine and constructing the entire rocket from scratch). His brother, Aidan, recalls fun times of building and fixing, and sometimes destroying, everything together. Kyle, Aidan and their mother would drive through the alleys of Chicago looking for "scrap" metal for the boys to weld and create new things. Kyle and Molly were especially close. He was Molly's best friend. He taught her about music and bands. When Molly was learning to talk she called him "kow" and he called her "goose," as in silly goose. They wrote songs and performed them together.
Kyle was a certified Motorcyle Technician. He loved working on and riding motorcyles. He had the ability to see the problems and how to correct them with anything motor related. His knowledge was so extensive that it didn't end at motors. Anything electronic or computer related was easy for him to figure out and create. He was always building and designing new ways to simplify devices.
Kyle was more than an excellent golfer, making the varsity golf team at Luther North as a freshman. He was an intense tennis player, almost a new John McEnroe.
Kyle is survived by his parents, Jack and Deborah; brother, Aidan McCarthy; sister, Molly McCarthy; grandmothers, Elaine Ostrowski and Lorraine McCarthy; and niece, Anastasja Lopez. He is preceded in death by his brother, Ian McCarthy; and grandfathers, Henry Ostrowski and Charles McCarthy.
Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Funeral Care.
