Bob was born in South Gate, California on December 15, 1937 to Bob and Mabel Trennert. He grew up an Air Force Brat and, in his youth, moved around the country to Washington DC, Texas, and Colorado before his family eventually settled in the city of Bell, CA.
Bob’s college career started with his Bachelor’s degree at Occidental College in Englewood, CA (1963). He then received his master’s degree at Los Angeles State College (1965) and finally obtained his Doctorate Degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1968). He went on to become a Professor of History at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA where he taught for 7 years from 1967-1974. Bob next acquired a position at Arizona State University which brought his family to Tempe, Arizona. Bob taught History, with an emphasis on Native American History, for 30 years at ASU. He retired in 2003 although remained a fixture on campus charitably assisting graduate students with their studies until 2008.
Along with his many teaching accolades, including being the Department Chair of the History department for several years, he held memberships in a variety of organizations. Bob was a founding member of the Western History Association, the Mining History Association, and the Scottsdale Westerns. Bob was also a long-time member of the Arizona Historical Society, National Endowment of the Humanities, and the Railroad Historical Society. His hobbies included his beloved model railroad he built in his garage and photography. For most of his life he had his camera hung around his neck. His passions included taking photos of all things trains and planes although his greatest joy was taking pictures of his family and friends.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Linda Trennert, son Robert Anthony Trennert III (Shari), daughter Kristina Henderson (Steve), and two granddaughters who adored him; Emma Benefield (15) and Addison Benefield (12).
Bob is predeceased in death by his father, Robert Anthony Trennert, Sr (1907-1987), his mother Mabel Trennert (1912-1992), and his sister Norma Nelson (1940-2014).
Bob was a beloved teacher, husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed dearly.
