Jose Antonio (“Tony”) Ramos, 92, a longtime resident of West Miami, Florida, died Friday, September 14, 2018, with his loving wife Gloria by his side. Born in 1926, and raised in Cardenas, Cuba, Mr. Ramos was an innovative and caring teacher in Cuba and Miami.
Mr. Ramos graduated in 1954 from the Universidad de Oriente, in Santiago, Cuba, were he studied philosophy and education. He subsequently taught high school history in Palma Soriano, Oriente, Cuba. In 1960, Mr. Ramos immigrated to the United States, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami, a master’s degree from Florida International University, and Specialist degree from Nova Northeastern University, then spent a career teaching business subjects in the Miami Dade County Public School System. Mr. Ramos was also the teacher coordinator of the Diversified Co-operative Training Program at Miami Edison Senior High School. Always looking to help people advance themselves through education, after retirement, he taught adults basic computing skills and MS Office at The English Center until his late 80s.
Mr. Ramos married Gloria Calderon in 1960. Together they had the privilege to raise three incredible children to be productive and contributing members of society. Mr. Ramos enjoyed family gatherings and was an entertaining story and joke teller. He felt especially blessed to spend time with his young, vibrant grandson, Nicholas, who was born in 2017.
Mr. Ramos is survived by his wife of 58 years; his son Jose Antonio Ramos, Jr. (wife Suzanne Romajas) (son Nicholas) of Washington, DC; his son David Ramos (wife Christina Hampton) of Hollywood, FL; and his daughter Gloria Ramos of Pasadena, CA. He is also survived by his sister Ana Ester Salazar (husband Roberto Salazar), nephews Roberto Salazar (wife Mercedes Salazar) and William Salazar and his beloved sisters-in-law Isa Calderon and Celia Martinez.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Ramos’ family requests that donations be made in his memory to the St. Jude Shrine, 512 W. Saratoga Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. The viewing will be held at Caballero-Rivero-Westchester Funeral Home, 8200 Bird Road, Miami, on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, from 6:00 PM-11:00 PM. The funeral will be Wednesday, September 19, 2019 at 1:00 PM.
