Shirley was born July 4, 1933, in Jacksonville, Texas, to Hazel L. and Homer C. Scoggins. She was the eldest of five children.
Shirley graduated from Jacksboro High School in 1950, attended Business College in Wichita Falls, then completed her education at UTPB where she received a BA in Accounting.
Shirley was married to Walter O' Neal on January 10, 1953; they were married for 58 years. They lived in Wichita Falls two years before moving to Midland in 1955. Shirley worked mainly in the oil and gas industry which included Joseph I O' Neil, Jr.; John J. Redfern Jr., Remuda Oil & Gas, worked several years in the medical field with Southwest Orthopedic. She returned in 2008 to work as a contract Division Order Analyst for Concho Resources, LP, retiring in January 2014. She was also actively involved in MUGS Softball Association, and she taught Sunday school at Crestview Baptist Church and Kelview Baptist Church. She served in the Rainbow Association where she attained Worthy Advisor status. She was also a member of the ABWA where she was honored as “Woman of the Year” and in addition was active in B&PW, PALTA, NALTA, PBADOA and NADOA.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Walter O'Neal; her brother, Curtis L. Scoggins, brother-in-law, Louis E. Gibbs; nephew, Steve Gibbs; great niece, Melissa Ann Swain; and great great nephew, Jason Swain.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Marylyn Gibbs of Midland; her brother and sister-in-law, Conrad and Jeanelle Scoggins of Silsbee; Texas, sister, Margaret Brewer of Richardson, Texas; sister-in-law, Varda Scoggins of Navasota, Texas; and sister-in-law, Betty Swift of Dallas, Texas. In addition she is survived by nieces, Kathy Glavish and Neina (Scoggins); Sherrie Thornhill and husband David, Carla Scoggins, Teri Griffin and husband Jim, Sandy Fant and husband Dan, and Debbie Gibbs; nephews, Kerry Scoggins and wife Laura, Darrick Gibbs and wife Moon Hee, Timothy Scoggins and wife Marla, and Randal Brewer; twenty great nieces and nephews; five great great nieces and nephews; and other family and wonderful friends. Shirley cherished her two pets, Brandi and Little Bit.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2014, at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, Texas. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Olney, Texas.
