James S. Collins December 5, 1930 – February 9, 2020
James S. Collins, 89, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2020, surrounded by his family at his home in Ham Lake, MN.
Jim was born December 5, 1930 in Melrose, WI to Shirleigh and Vera Collins. He married his childhood sweetheart, Joyce Timm, on June 5, 1951. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years in Korea. He received a degree from DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago which led to his lifelong career as a computer technical writer and manager with the UNIVAC division of Sperry Rand and Unisys. He retired in 1990.
Jim dearly loved his family and all outdoor activities. With the primary purpose of viewing birds and wildlife, he and Joyce explored many exotic lands, including Africa, Australia, Peru, and the Galápagos Islands. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. He loved all children and most dogs. He delighted in any good food, but was especially fond of ice cream and chocolate.
Jim was a gentle soul with a sweet sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. He was devoted to Joyce. Even in the hospital, when asked to identify her during the doctors’ litany of questions, he would answer, “My sweetheart.”
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce; his children, Judy (Kevin) Flicker, Joan (Ron) Collins-Marotte, John (Kathy) Collins; his daughter-in-law, Sherre Collins; his grandchildren, Tyrel, Justin (Abigail), and Sam (Kelsey) Collins, Isaac (Sarah) Marotte, Julia (Andrew) Reiland, Joe (Michele) Flicker, Tressa (Sean) Wyner; and his great-grandchildren, Moselle and Atira Collins, Atticus, Winston and Rex Wyner, Jaxen and Alex Flicker, Hudson and Harrison Collins, Quinn Reiland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mike Collins; his grandson, Anthony Marotte; and his siblings, Keith and Donn Collins, and Kathleen Zeman.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 14, at the Sunset Cemetery Chapel (2250 St Anthony Blvd. NE, Minneapolis, MN), with visitation an hour prior. Burial following in Sunset Cemetery. Lunch will be served at 12:30.

In the small amount of time I spent with Jim, it was clear that he had only good to say about absolutely everyone and everything. Not a negative thing was discussed. And his love for Joice from the day he met her, so sweet. His grandsons talked about Grandpa Jim and Grama Joice at their first words. If I could be half the Grandparent that he was I would be happy!!! He was a pleasure to spend time with and I am a better person having known just a glimpse of who he was. Blessing to family and friends.
