Mrs. Freeman was born in Union County on October 16th, 1920. She was the daughter of Harvey W. Mullis and Brite Vickery Mullis. She attended Matthews High School and Carolina Business College.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by several nieces and nephews; and was in the loving care of Gary and Collette Mullis.
She and her husband Earl, were founding members of Calvary Church of the Nazarene. They started prayer meetings on the east side of town. The church was officially organized on November the 28th, 1965, with Reverend J. McCray Holmes as Pastor. At the organizational meeting, “Calvary Church of the Nazarene” was accepted as the official name as suggested by Earl. Mrs. Freeman was converted at the age of 16 while in Presbyterian Hospital. Her joy was serving the Lord as Sunday school teacher, Nazarene Youth International president, Nazarene Missions International president, Church Board Member and Secretary, Home Department Ministries Director, Women Ministries Director and Prayer Chain Coordinator for her local church. In 1948, she was honored as Youth Director by the Charlotte Youth for Christ Ministry of Rev. Dr. Billy Graham’s ministry.
She and Earl were partners in ministry and missions. Missions were her passion. She was a delegate to five General World Mission Conventions. She was awarded by the NC District Church for 25 years of dedicated service collectively, on the council and as secretary for 20 years. She also received the Distinguished Service Award for her faithful and creative leadership. Her local church presented her with their Distinguished Service award for her faithful service, dedication and loyalty to Jesus Christ and the church.
Aunt Myrtle was a caring and giving soul. She always welcomed and encouraged her family and took great care of her parents. She loved her siblings and reveled in telling the family stories. We will truly miss her until the reunion of the saints, in the Lord’s will and time.
