Carolyn Ruth Smith, a native Mobilian, born March 3, 1928, died peacefully in her home on September 22, 2018. She is preceded in her death by her parents Gordon Smith Jr. and Ruth Ollinger Smith as well as her siblings Gordon Smith III and Cenie Terrell Smith, Ellie Smith Brown and Edward Joseph Brown Sr., Ann Smith Williams and Robert Edward Williams III, and Robert Bernard Smith. Carolyn was born deaf but was never handicapped, living a fiercely independent life. She attended the Visitation and Archbishop Toolen High School. After attending college at Ursaline University in New Orleans, she returned to Mobile where she worked in the payroll department of Smith Bakery until her retirement in 1990. Carolyn was an avid golfer, winning countless accolades.
She will be greatly missed by her extensive family and friends including her 12 nieces and nephews: Gordon Smith IV (Ruth), Kathleen Smith Taylor (Lisa), Edward Joseph Brown Jr. (Betsy), James Gordon Brown (Anne), Ruth Anna Brown (Diane), Richard Diamond Brown (Allison), Patrick Thomas Brown (Lisa), Robert Anthony Brown (Monteigne), Robert Edward Williams IV (Yvette), Catherine Williams Huettemann (Rich), Andrew Smith Williams (Pam), and David Gordon Williams (Inson). Visitation will begin on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. prior to a memorial mass at 10:30 a.m. from St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3704 Springhill Ave., Mobile, AL 36608.
