Following graduation from the Visitation, she attended the University of Alabama.
During the fall of 1949, Madeleine met and promptly fell in love with the handsome Henry Manning McPhillips, Jr. They were married on June 3, 1950. Three children were born of this union: James Manning, Frank Maury, and Jane Fontaine.
She was active in Mobile throughout her life as a member of several mystic societies, the Junior League of Mobile, and The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
Throughout her life, Madeleine enjoyed gardening, playing tennis and bridge, traveling with friends and family, and boating on the “Miss Madeleine” with her husband. Madeleine was also deeply interested in genealogy, studying the lives of her many notable relatives, including Bishop Richard H. Wilmer.
Madeleine was predeceased by her sister Jane Maury Denton. She is survived by her three children: Manning (Catherine), Maury (Ashley), and Jane McPhillips Allgood. Madeleine’s growing family includes: seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many great friends.
A burial Mass will be held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Monday, February 18 at 11:00 a.m., preceded by a visitation at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Center. A burial service will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery following Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visitation Monastery or Wilmer Hall.
