Fleetwood (Woody) Hines Jr. , 62, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, in Destin, Florida.

Woody was born on September 14, 1955 to Fleetwood and Ruth Hines, and was the brother of Olivia Williams. He attended Robert E. Lee High School (class of 1973) in Montgomery, Alabama where he courted and won the heart of Kathy Davis. After a brief time at Auburn University, Woody transferred to, and graduated from, The University of Alabama to be with his sweetheart. Woody and Kathy were married June 12, 1976 for 43 years. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Birmingham where Woody worked for 35 years for the Alabama Department of Public Health Bureau of Clinical Laboratories.

Woody was known for his kind heart, his easy-going manner, and his playful sense of humor. A loving son, father, grandfather, and friend, Woody is survived by his mother, Ruth; wife Kathy, and four children, Rachel, Emily, Andrew, and Maria; Rachel’s husband, Tim, and their children Paxton and Grayson; as well as Andrew’s wife, Jeri and their soon to be daughter, Luna.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3pm (visitation at 2pm) on July 14 at Saint Marks UMC, 2901 Columbiana RD, Vestavia Hills AL 35126.

Reverends Don Cross, Maria Hanlin, and Donnie Erwin-Brown will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Woody’s name to either the Jimmie Hale Mission, or the United Methodist Children’s Home via Saint Marks UMC.

I worked with Woody at the State Health Lab. He was a great guy and will be missed by many. May God comfort his family and friends in this difficult time.

I don't have words. Woody will be missed. He was great to work with. I am glad he had an opportunity to retire and spend time with his family and to enjoy life. Farewell dear friend. Be of good courage family. May God turn his face toward you and give you peace.
