Mack G. Scharmett, 102 years young, most recently of Yorktown Heights, New York (and formerly of Riverdale, New York, Mahopac, New York, and Boynton Beach, Florida), passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on May 12, 2021.
Mack was born on October 10, 1918 (the youngest of three sons) to Max and Sarah Scharmett in Ansonia, Connecticut, during the midst of the Flu Pandemic of 1918.
Tragically on October 9, 1918, while Sarah was in the hospital preparing to give birth, Mack’s father Max succumbed to the Spanish Flu; thus Mack and his two older brothers George and Bill were raised by their mother, Sarah.
Mack (SGT) is a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the Army at the age of 23, following graduation from Podiatry School and was assigned to Fort Hamilton, applying his medical background to assist with the care of returning wounded soldiers.
Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Mack opened a private Podiatry practice in Manhattan, where he practiced until 1988. He was also the Director of Podiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital for more than 37 years and Chief of Podiatry at Elmsford Hospital and the Hebrew Home for the Aged, until his retirement at the age of 87.
Mack met the love of his life, Diana Levin in 1951, and they were married in 1952, together as one for more than 66 years, until Diana’s passing in November 2018. Together, Diana and Mack went on to have two children, Carol and Gary.
Carol and her late husband John Ambrosecchia, and Gary and his wife Cathy (Leshner) Scharmett, in turn blessed Diana and Mack with four grandchildren, Jessica and Sarah Ambrosecchia and Jared and Samantha Scharmett.
Remarkably, at the age of 101, Mack presided over the Hamotzi at the wedding of his grandson Jared to wife Amanda (Liesner) Scharmett.
Mack was a unique and special person, devoted first to his family, but also to his many friends and patients. He had great wisdom and was warm, generous, energetic, and ageless. He was relatable to just about everyone, from the custodian in his parking garage, to the president of his hospital, and everyone was treated with the same respect and dignity that he felt all people deserved.
Always a kind word, a thoughtful compliment, and of course, a generous tip. He was beloved by most everyone who knew him.
His presence will be sorely missed as he joins Diana in the hereafter, but the memories that he created for so many people during his 102 years will undoubtedly bring comfort and smiles.
“Mack the Knife” Rest in peace and know that you are loved and cherished.
