Patsy Ruth Cates, of both Nacogdoches and Etoile, passed away Friday, June 21, 2018, in Lufkin at the age of 76 years, 7 months, and 2 days. She was born November 19, 1941, in Etoile to parents Leon Kimmey and Lena (Morton) Kimmey.
Patsy was a woman of strong Christian faith. She was the first woman elected into the Nacogdoches County Tax Office. She held her position for 4 terms and retired after 24 years of service to this county. She was the longest tenured person in her position for Nacogdoches County. Patsy was a pioneer woman who that loved her community and her job. She also loved going to the casino and playing the slots. She was even on a first name basis with most of the staff there and used the many comp points she received to enjoy the various perks of the casino. They even comped her a scooter to help her get around the casino. Her luck was so great at that she eventually won a car at the Horseshoe, along with many other items in her time there. Some of her hobbies included sewing, crafting, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Cates was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Travis Leon Kimmey; and sister, Marie Broach.
She is survived by her husband, James Cates; sons, Don Norwood and wife Sandy and James Norwood; daughter, Sandra Morgan and Andre; sisters, Joyce Wesley and husband Carey and LaMerle Putt and husband Harlan; granddaughters, Courtney, Taylor, Laycie, and Lynsie; grandsons, Justin and J.C.; and 6 great granddaughters.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2018, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel officiated by Bro. Glen Morton. Interment will follow at Saints Rest Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.
Pallbearers will be Curtis Smith, Carey Wesley, Justin Norwood, Don Norwood, James Norwood, George Cantor, and Emily Hanzel.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2018, at Cason Monk-Metcalf.
