She grew up in the holler at Hoover Road, among grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, log cabins, and tobacco fields. Educated by Brown County schools.
Daughter of Winifred and Robert Wall, Robert Schrougham.
Mother of Sara Jane & Shirley Jean (d. 1960), Randell Scott (Marlo), Sally Ann, and Michael Ross.
Grandmother to Brendon, Evelyn, Hayley, and Hayden. Bonus grandmother/great grandmother to Kristen/Analina & Aubrey.
She raised her family here and there, in and around Indianapolis. Growing up, Mom’s mantra to my brothers and I was “I don’t care what you do in life, I just want you to be happy”. She loved her family fiercely and was our biggest cheerleader. She was strong willed, yet sensible, devoted, and selfless. As a young mother she worked tirelessly as a stay-at-home mom, while successfully running a roadside vegetable stand stocked from her own garden. As we got older, she enjoyed working as greens keeper for the City of Indianapolis public golf courses–Sarah Shank, Eagle Creek, and Smock. She eventually earned her real estate license and worked as a Realtor for Century 21 Skillman in Indy for several years, until she got a wild hair to get a CDL and became a long-haul truck driver for 15 years. She was off the road for a few years as she owned and operated her own restaurant, Country Sage in Nashville, Indiana.
In retirement, Mom lived a simple life in her Gnaw Bone, Indiana bungalow where you could find her reading Louis L'amour, or watching Homicide Hunter with Joe Kenda. She loved keeping up with us through Facebook and a daily game of Words with Friends. She occasionally journeyed over to IL, most recently to attend Evie’s graduation from UIUC, and was beyond proud to learn that Ev was accepted into grad school at UI.
She was immensely proud of her children’s accomplishments, and would frequently share stories to anyone willing to sit and listen. Her happiest moments were when her Nevada grandkids, Hayley and Hayden, and her Illinois grandkids, Brendon, Evie, and Kristen would visit. She will be remembered fondly for preparing family favorites…cornbread, gravy, and tomatoes with sweet tea, and a breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, and toaster strudel.
Mom has left a great legacy with her calm demeanor, excellent cooking skills, and resolute mindset.
She will be greatly missed. Passed away June of 2022.
Memorial services to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1682 State Road 135 North in Nashville, IN.
