Joe is survived by Dorothy (West) Oakley, his devoted wife of 66 years; sons Terry (Jan) Oakley of Smyrna, TN, and Brian (Michelle) Oakley of Mount Juliet, TN; grandchildren, Gail (Troy) Hillis, Cindy (Jeff) Youngs, Tyler Oakley; great grandchildren, Shawn and Brady Hillis, and Allison and Paisley Youngs; sister Sue (Allen) Kramer; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Woodrow Wilson Oakley and Marjorie (Allen) Oakley; and brother, Robert Oakley.
Joe was born on May 26, 1935 in Charlotte, Tennessee. He married Dorothy Lee West, the love of his life, in 1954. The couple raised two sons together.
He worked hard over the years, most notably for Overton Produce. During his frequent stops, he never met a stranger. He was kind, compassionate, and empathetic, and would not hesitate to offer his assistance to a stranger if there was a chance he could help.
He had a passion for sports, particularly the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Titans. He also enjoyed anything involving his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His weekends were often spent at dance recitals, gymnastics competitions, karate meets, baseball fields, or basketball courts.
Joe always encouraged his family to follow their dreams and remained a steady presence in good times and in bad times. His beaming smile always reached his eyes and his infectious laugh was unmatched and will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be 10 AM -12 PM on Monday, July 13th at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home and Memorial Park. The funeral service will begin at 12 PM, with burial immediately following. The service will be officiated by Chris Kramer and Allen Kramer.
