IN THE CARE OF

Cotten Funeral Home

Glenna Phyllis Bates, 87, of New Bern, North Carolina passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022. Glenna was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 22, 1935, to the late Thomas and Rose Marlin. Glenna lived most of her life in Philadelphia, Pa. She graduated from high school and began a career as a draftsman where she met Ed. They fell in love, married and built a family. Her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She loved crafting, reading, crocheting and was a fairly good card shark. Her true love was camping at Cherrystone Campground in Virginia. She loved to fish and crab the Chesapeake Bay and has passed these activities on to her children and grandchildren. For my children… “You are the babies I carried beneath my heart. The closest bond I ever had with anyone. My most significant accomplishment and the deepest joy I have ever known.” She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Edward Bates, 2 children, Cynthia English and husband, Dan of Marlton, NJ, Dr. Thomas Bates and wife, Eileen of Morehead City, NC, 6 grandchildren, Eric English and wife, Sam, Courtney English, Thomas Bates, Jason Bates, William Bates, Sophie Bates, and grandson, Shawn English who is in heaven. We would like to thank the following people for the love and friendship they showed our mother throughout the years. Al and Juanita, Fred, Missy and Brad, Jeanette, and April. A special thanks to Carteret Landing and especially, Sara, for the caring support they provided our mother and the continued support for our father.
