Jessica Starr Guter

Jessica Starr Guter, 46, of New Bern died on April 12, 2018 after a courageous yearlong battle against pancreatic cancer. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 23 years Tim and their children Jake, Josh and Meghan. She is also survived by her parents Donna and Allan Starr, brothers Aaron (Melanie) and Jeremy (Jeannie), mother in law Barbara Guter, sister in law Kristen Fyfe-Mills (Doug), brother in law Rick Guter, niece Kayla Fyfe and nephew Trevor Fyfe. She was preceded in death by her father in law Richard Guter.

Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, she graduated from The Perkiomen School where she captained the tennis and lacrosse teams. She received a BA in elementary education from Greensboro College and an MA in elementary education from North Carolina A&T. She taught in the Guilford and Craven County school systems, the latter at Brinson Elementary. For the past 17 years she was a teacher at the First Presbyterian Pre School.

She loved being a Mom to her children and all the preschoolers she cared for. She especially enjoyed being with and taking care of her beloved Boxers Otis and Chance. She spent many happy summers in Duck, NC where she enjoyed the beach and spending quality time with her family. In all respects she was devoted to her family and was the ultimate Soccer Mom.

Special thanks from the family to all those who cared for her at The Duke Cancer Center and CarolinaEast Medical Center during her arduous journey. Their compassionate care will be forever remembered by her family. In lieu of flowers consider donations to the Duke Cancer Institute Eisert Research Fund for Pancreatic Cancer and/or The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. And many thanks to all her friends who raised money for Duke Cancer Center at several fundraising events.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 20th at 6 pm at Cotten Chapel, visit one hour prior from 5 pm – 6 pm (business casual attire) Reception to follow.

Burial will be private.
