December 21, 1939 – November 2, 2018
Philip J . McDermott passed away peacefully on November 2, 2018. Born in the Bronx on December 21, 1939 to Philip and Mary ( Harty) McDermott. He was a 50-year resident of Rockland County and long-time parishioner of St. Augustine’s.
He met his wife of 56 years, Maria Peros, working at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan during high school. After proudly serving in the U.S Navy from 1958-1962, he and Maria married in November 1962. He is survived his loving wife, five children and their spouses: John McDermott of Las Vegas, NV(Tumi), Anne Skific of Haverstraw (Albert), Lisa Baer of Lafayette, CA (Edward), Michael McDermott of Astoria, Queens, NY (Nicole), and Mark McDermott of Blauvelt (Meghan); seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his sister Rosemary McDermott of Haverstraw, two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Phil was an avid reader and an enthusiastic storyteller, often regaling his children and grandchildren with stories of his Bronx childhood , his time as a Tin Can Sailor in the Navy and his days working at AT&T. He loved to work with his hands on various projects around the house, as well as spend time with his children at one of the many local parks. He was known by his friendly nature and always had a warm greeting for anyone he encountered.
Phil also worked for Rockland County government for ten years.
Phil’s family will receive friends at Higgins Funeral Home on Main Street in New City, NY on Monday, November 12th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, November 13th 10 AM at St. Augustine Church in New City. Interment will immediately follow at the Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Brick Church Rd. in New Hempstead, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Phil’s name to Soldiers' Angels .
