Barbara S. Laufer, 90 of New Orleans, Louisiana peacefully passed away Monday night, January 18, 2021 from neurological complications resulting from Covid. Born on September 9, 1930 to Beatrice Abromowitz Schiffman and Morris Schiffman in New York, New York. She is survived by her children, Michael H. Laufer (Audrey) of New York, New York, Jeffrey N. Laufer (Elizabeth) of New Orleans, and grandchildren, Shawn Tucker (Jennifer), Lauren Laufer, Jessica Laufer, Sam Laufer, and Rachel Laufer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Beryl Laufer, who passed away just 12 weeks ago, and her daughter, Cathy Laufer (Kay Lindsey) of Baton Rouge. Barbara began her professional career as a dental hygienist in the Empire State Building before moving to New Orleans with her family, getting married and taking many years off while raising her three children. A life-long student and vociferous reader, she later began an active volunteer career at the New Orleans Museum of Art where she chaired the Woman’s Volunteer Committee of the museum’s 1977 The Treasures of Tutankhamen exhibition and later at WYES, the public television station.
Barbara was full of life, vibrancy, and energy as she constantly sought to acquire knowledge, develop new skills, and visit new places. Most of all, she had a deep and enduring love for Beryl, with whom she could not live without.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the New Orleans Museum of Art, WYES or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Burial will be private.
