Velma Buras Parnell, born October 16, 1923 in New Orleans, passed away peacefully at the age of 94, at her home on Friday, March 16, 2018. She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Melvin L. Parnell, Sr.; father Vallrie F. Buras; mother Elizabeth Krauser Buras; brothers Vallrie J. Buras and Floyd A. Buras. She is survived by her son Dr. Melvin L. Parnell, Jr. (Leslie) and three daughters, Barbara Parnell, Sheryl Parnell Boraski (Jonathan) and Patti Parnell as well as three grandchildren Jonathan Boraski, Victoria Boraski, and Sarah Parnell.
Velma attended Annunciation School then Eleanor McMain High School and ED White Business School. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Velma enjoyed her life as a homemaker and was very active in raising her children and traveling extensively to support her husband’s professional baseball career with the Boston Red Sox. In addition, she was very active in the Lakeview Botany Guild, Lakeshore Garden Club, St. Dominic Parish, St. Dominic School Mother’s Club, and Lakeshore Christmas Doorway contest.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 1:00p.m. Visitation will begin at 11:00a.m. Interment will follow the Mass in Metairie Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Masses are preferred.
