Biran, Paula (Langberg), died peacefully surrounded by her children on April 26, 2022, in New York City. Born in 1937 in New York, Paula was a warm, loyal, and loving person blessed with a keen intellect, deep musical talent, and a wonderful sense of humor. After growing up in Lynbrook, NY, Paula graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1959. While pursuing a postgraduate degree in conducting at the Juilliard School of Music, Paula met a young Israeli baritone, Ephraim Biran. They were engaged five days later and were happily married for almost 58 years, until Ephraim’s death in 2020. Together they raised three children, Jonathan, Raphael, and Alisa in a home filled with lively conversation and music-making. Paula was the conductor of the Upper School Chorus at the Brearley School for over 25 years, and also served as Brearley’s Director of Activities. She founded and conducted several adult choruses, including groups affiliated with Brearley and Congregation Rodeph Sholom, where Ephraim was the Cantor for more than 30 years. Paula helped hundreds of adults and children discover the joy of choral singing. In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren, Shira, Elizabeth, Ari, and Lena, whom she adored. Paula’s family, friends, and community will remember her forever.
A virtual shiva, as well as an in-person musical remembrance and reception will be scheduled for a later date.
