Richard (nicknamed Irish) born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY. Graduated from St. John’s Prep High School 1952. Graduated with his Bachelors of Science from Manhattan College class of 1956. He received Masters Degrees from the New School, NY and Steven Institute, NJ. Richard’s professional career was spent in the technical writing field, which allowed him to work for many companies and banks in the New York Area. He was also an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University for well over 20 years. He cherished his teaching position and loved interacting with collegiate students.
Richard was a good athlete as well. He completed the New York City Marathon 7 times. He loved baseball and grew up as a Brooklyn Dodgers fan until the Dodger “betrayed Brooklyn” as he stated. He started to follow “the arch nemesis Yankees” and has been an adamant follower of the Yankees until his death. Richard is very humble about the chance the Yankees gave him in spring training. He donned the Yankee uniform for two games as Center Fielder and has fantastic stories about how he fielded fly balls in Monument Park (back when it was fair play territory). Richard also followed the New York Rangers and New York Giants. He sold hot dogs at Giants Stadium and admits to being more interested in the game than his job.
He has always been an adamant supporter of children’s and especially girls’ access to sports and the right to play. Always active in PTO organizations in elementary school and high schools which his daughters attended. Richard is well known for his intervention to save the Notre Dame School for Girls from closing. He continues to support the Asphalt Green Sports complex. Richard provided wonderful travel opportunities for his wife and daughters throughout his life.
A survivor of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, Richard’s love of New York City became stronger and he became even more endeared to the city, his friends and family. Richard was very close to Ilse’s family in Germany. He supported many charities throughout the years.
Richard was not a fan of somber funerals, and so a memorial service will be planned for the near future. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to any of the following charities:
