Charles Gillis Gillis Dillon

Charles Gillis Dillon of Rockport, IN, ascended to the Lord on the evening of January 19 at Deaconess Hospital while surrounded by his natural and church family. He was born on December 30, 1932 in Williamson, WV. He was known as “Gillis” to all of his family and as “Charlie” or “Gunsmoke” to his friends.

Gillis left behind a large and loving family that will miss him. Gillis was survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Jean; 3 sons, Ronnie (Donna) of Alexandria, Virginia; Roby of King George, Virginia, and Matthew (Amber) of Evansville, and a daughter, Nola Dillon Jackson (Kim Monroe) of Norcross, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Stephanie, Chandale, Zoe, Iva, Cash and Reese; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Sally Standiford; 22 nieces and nephews; 25 great nieces and nephews.

Gillis was preceded in death by his parents, L. E. and ChloeKathern, and brother Bill. He was also survived by siblings Betty Scott, Jack, Tommy and Mary Lewis and numerous nephews, nieces, and great-nephews and nieces.

Gillis faithfully served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. He retired honorably in 1972 after serving on the USS Palan-CDE-122, USS Orion-AS-18, USS Observation Island-AG-154, and USS LY Spear-AS-36.

After retiring from the Navy, the family moved permanently to Rockport, Indiana in 1972. He worked for I&M/American Electric Power in Rockport until his retirement in 1997. At the age of 66, Gillis became the oldest employee in the AEP system to become a certified welder.

Gillis was an active member of the Baker Chapel United Methodist Church, 3495 E. State Road 62, Boonville, IN 47601-9727. He played a significant role in rebuilding Baker Chapel following the tornado of 2005. He was also a staple of the Spencer County and Rockport community. He served in Spencer County REACT; Treasurer and former President of the Rockport Lion’s Club; Old Rockport, Incorporated; contributed in the restoration of the Lincoln Pioneer Village; and was a principal in Gentry’s Flowers & Quaint Shop.

Gillis was an avid railroad hobbyist, devoted family man, active Granddaddy, coffee drinker, dog lover, and fan of NASCAR and Johnny Cash. Above all else, he loved his wife, Barbara.

Services will be 1:00 PM, Monday, January 24, 2011, at Baker Chapel United Methodist Church, 3495 E. State Road 62, Boonville, IN 47601-9727, with burial at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Rockport with full U.S. Navy military honors. Friends may visit 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, Newburgh, IN, and 10 AM to service time at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baker Chapel United Methodist Church.

MY BROTHER JIMMY CALLED ME TODAY AND TOLD ME OF YOUR DAD'S PASSING. I REMEMBER HIM VERY WELL.AS A LITTLE BOY IN WILLIAMSON, WV, MY BROTHER WOULD TAKE ME TO SEE THE WOLFPACK PLAY BASKETBALL.
