Mrs. Rachel Marie Ayer

Niantic- Rachel (Rider) Ayer, 85, formerly of Terrace Ave., passed way peacefully Saturday, July 24, 2010

Rachel was born on May 5, 1925 in Brewer, ME the daughter of Hartley and Vera Ward Rider.

She married Clayton C. Ayer in Brewer Me. they were married for 42 years. He predeceased her on July 16, 1987. Rachel was also preceded by her partner of 12 yrs. John E. Bassett.

Rachel graduated from Brewer High School in 1942, and Beal’s Business College in Bangor, ME She was employed by several different companies as administrative secretary, WGY Radio Station, Footman’s Dairy, Merchants National Bank, Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, and her husbands business Ayer Building Contractor. Rachel served in many community activities. East Lyme Nursing Assoc.Niantic Community Church School Superintend, Girl Scout Leader, Assit. Librarian at LB Haynes School. She was a member of Se Beowulf, VFW in Orrington, Women’s Christian Service Assoc. 50plus, East Lyme Seniors, Niantic Community Church.

Rachel is survived by her sister Charlotte Shaughnessy of Brewer, Me. and her children. Larry C. Ayer and his partner Larene Fatone of Niantic. Scott E. Ayer of Oakdale and her daughter Jan Ayer Cushing and her husband Richard. Her grandchildren Clayton and Calvin Cushing and nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service will be held Thursday July 29th at 7:00 pm at Niantic Community Church. Calling hours will be on Wednesday July 28th 6 to 8 pm at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Hope St. Niantic.

In lieu of Flower please send donation to Niantic Community Church to the Accessibility Fund, something that was dear to Rachel’s heart.
