After a yearlong fight against cancer, David Edward Spickes, 70, “slipped the surly bonds of earth” on October 28, 2018. He passed peacefully at home in Sherwood, Arkansas.

David was born on January 13, 1948 in Little Rock, AR to Ben Spickes, Sr. and Bonnie (Jernigan) Spickes. He grew up there and graduated from Central High School in 1966. After high school, he attended the State College of Arkansas, now known as the University of Central Arkansas, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1970.

David worked a series of jobs in the insurance and construction industries until, in 1982, he founded his own commercial painting company. Soon after, he went into business with his brother Ben Spickes Jr. and the company became known as The Spickes Brothers Painting Contractors in North Little Rock, AR. He successfully ran the company for 36 years with the help of his partners Ben Spickes Jr., Brad Otis, and Benjamin Spickes III.

David was wed to Janet (Robbins) Spickes on May 28, 1982. They were married for 36 years. He was a loving husband and father to their only son Drew Spickes. He was very involved with his family, including coaching little league teams and volunteering his time to help the Boy Scouts and the Central Arkansas Christian High School Band. He enjoyed traveling with his family in their RV and made many trips across the United States. When he wasn’t spending time with his family, he also enjoyed photography, videography, woodworking, and flying sport planes.

David maintained a private pilot's license for much of his life and enjoyed building and flying sport planes with his brother Ben Jr. Most notably, he flew aerobatic demonstrations at air shows in their custom-built Steen Skybolt "Double Trouble". He made many friends during his time at the airport and at fly-ins across the country.

David was a faithful Christian and an active churchgoer his entire life. His church home for the majority of his life was the Park Hill Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Little Rock, AR. In addition to being a member, he also served the church in various roles throughout his time there, including three years as chairman of the board.

David was preceded in death by his parents Ben Spickes, Sr. and Bonnie (Jernigan) Spickes.

David is survived by his wife Janet (Robbins) Spickes; his son Drew Spickes and wife Kelsey (Moon) of Fort Smith, AR; his grandchildren Jonathan, Felicia, and Gwendolyn Spickes of Fort Smith, AR; his brother Ben Spickes Jr. and wife Betty (Williams) of North Little Rock, AR; his sister Jane (Spickes) Spicer and husband Art of Hot Springs Village, AR; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving family.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on November 8, 2018 at the Park Hill Christian Church in North Little Rock, AR. A graveside service will follow at the Rest Hills Cemetery in North Little Rock, AR. A visitation will be held from 6:00–8:00 PM on November 7, 2018 at the Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home in North Little Rock, AR.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made either to the Building Fund of the Park Hill Christian Church in North Little Rock, AR or the Soup Kitchen of the Friendly Chapel Church of the Nazarene in North Little Rock, AR. Both of these causes were near to David's heart. The family of David Spickes wishes to thank the doctors and medical staff at UAMS and Arkansas Hospice for their generous and compassionate care for David over the course of the last year.

Janet...I am deeply honored and blessed to have known David. I was lucky enough to call him friend, not just landlord. His kindness, understanding, and generosity are unmatched. I will forever carry him in my heart. All my thoughts and prayers are for you and Drew during this time. May God grant the comfort and Peace that only HE can provide. Love & Hugs!

We want all of you to know how sorry we are for your loss. I always admired the skill of anyone that flew acrobatic maneuvers. I never had the nerve to do that kind of flying myself. It has been a long struggle during David's illness and our prayers stay with you as you adjust to the changes that will affect you and Drew.
By the way, the hand bell choir can always use an additional ringer anytime your available.

In Christ,
Bob and Rita Choate

My deepest sympathy to David's wonderful family. I had the pleasure of meeting David when he was 14 years old. I was the football coach at Southwest Junior High School in Little Rock. David played for us and it was Immediately apparent that he was a wonderful young man and had a wonderful and supporting family.
My deepest sympathy to David's family. I was fortunate to have known him.
