“You were the wind beneath my wings”

On June 22, 2020 our beloved Settimio (Sam) De Simone passed away after a life well lived. Sam was born in Collebrincioni, L'Aquila, Italy and immigrated to Canada at the age of 7. He never forgot his Italian roots and celebrated a commitment to family that included remembrance of those who had gone before. After arriving in Canada, Sam was raised in Toronto by his Mother (Dora), Father (Roberto) alongside his two sisters Maria and Gail and his Brother Walter. Many years of beautiful memories were gathered at their two primary residences on 14 Geary Ave and 585 Queens Drive.

Sam had astounding energy and drive that served his entrepreneurial spirit well. Sam’s first business venture was a store called Robert’s Men’s and Boy’s Wear; and later he opened 2 locations of The Den for Men. He also started his own manufacturing facility of high-end men’s suits known as Sir Exclusives. From there he went into building homes in various locations in the Toronto and surrounding area; eventually building subdivisions in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lake Wannata Cove in Florida, and a high-rise in Guatemala City. Along the way, he started many other companies including Arch Overhead Doors, and a Gym (The American Institute of Health and Fitness). While in Las Vegas, Sam completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in Business.

At a young age Sam married Oksana (Susan Bystrakiwski) and they had three sons: Robert, Warren and Marcus. Sam and Susan worked as a team as Sam’s work took them to various locations. They returned to Richmond Hill, Ontario to be present for the arrival of Rob and Marah’s first child, Trinity. Sam began work at his son Rob’s company (True North Nutrition) as the CFO. Two more grandchildren arrived: Jonah and Lauren. In 2004, Sam stayed home to care for Susan. After 31 amazing years of marriage, sadly, Susan passed away from cancer in 2005.

Sam welcomed more beautiful grandchildren: Warren’s son Clayton and Marcus’s two daughters Oksana and Reilly. In 2010 Sam was fortunate to meet his next true love in Julia Kiessling. After 5 years together, Sam married Julia in 2015. Sam and Julia enjoyed many beautiful years together with family and friends. Sam had a fierce love of life. He was an incredible and creative problem solver and a man of action. He will also be remembered for his well-told stories . But perhaps most of all, Sam will be remembered for his generous heart and his ability to connect with people. He made an impression on everyone he met. His love for his family had no bounds. He was a “rock” for many. He had amazing ways of working with people or situations to bring positive outcomes.

Sam fought a long battle with prostate cancer, and his strength, courage and positive determination is an inspiration to us all.

Due to the unique COVID 19 restrictions we all face, sadly physical attendance at the funeral will be limited to immediate family only by invitation. We are hoping in this unique circumstance, that all who would have liked to attend will join us via the live streaming of the Service.

Please join us virtually via Livestream of the Service for Sam on Saturday June 27th. Livestream will begin at 1pm during the Viewing. The Service will begin at 1:30pm.

The Livestream video of the Service has been archived on YouTube and will continue to be available for viewing at any time.

On behalf of the Newmarket Prostate Cancer Support Group, we would like to extend our condolences to Julia and family.

We first met a few years ago when Sam generously offered to act as the Treasurer for our support group. Our personal friendship with Sam and Julia grew from there.

What a kind and gentle soul he was. May his memory be a blessing.

Our lives crossed for a short period in Italy, his native country and where we live.
As soon as we met, we discovered his congeniality and contagious vitality, furthermore he had a charming old-style manners, an extraordinary smile and he surprised us with his uncommon generosity.
Even if only for a short period, we spent nice time together with Sam and Giulia and we will always keep these memories in our hearts.

So sad that you are no longer with us. Especially when it seemed that you had finally figured it out. Also sad that Robyn and me could not attend the service for your passing. At least I have the memories, good times and bad and can chuckle to myself when I think of the hilarious moments in our lives. You were very kind to me when life had thrown me into a panic and I will forever thank you. Peace and love be with you.

Dear Julia, Marcus Oksana, Reilly and lovely De Simone and Kiessling families who gathered five years ago June 28th,
A quote by David M. Eagleman keeps coming to mind “There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.” I believe Sam's name will be freely and honourably shared for many years to come. May his name be synonymous with courage, following dreams, staying in a place of possibility, and enormous love of friends and family. What a gift to say his name and have known him however briefly. May stories shared as you celebrate his life begin to overfill the treasure box in your hearts for him. My sincere condolences on the passing of wonderful Sam. Namaste, Yvonne

Having Sam and Julia come into my life was a true blessing. Arriving in a new province, away from most family and friends, the welcome my family received from Sam, Julia, and their family was a surprise. The day we arrived we were greeted with sandwiches and water - so we wouldn't have to worry about supper our first night. Having my son form a special bond with Clayton, Oksana and Reilly; all of whom my son considers his best friends. The amazing things Sam did for me and mine transcended the typical expectations of a landlord/tenant relationship – inviting me to family dinners when I was unable to travel home to mine; welcoming Desmond into his home and always sharing time as though we were family. I’ll always remember our conversations. Sam was wonderful to speak with – always full of stories, and compassion and empathy when listening to others.

Though I only knew Sam for a short 3 years, Sam will stay with me forever. I will always treasure the time through which Sam welcomed me and my son into his home. His generous spirit is something for us all to remember and to strive for. The kind and welcoming nature of his family are a testament to the man Sam was. He will be sorely missed.

Love and condolences to Julia, Rob, Warren, Marcus and the rest of the family.
