NORWICH – Robert J. Jones, 83, died peacefully at Backus Hospital on Saturday.

He was born in Norwich on March 22, 1931 to the late James and Lena (Dion) Jones. He graduated from Grossmont Union High School in California in 1945 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from San Diego State College in 1953. Robert served his country in the US Army until his Honorable Discharge. He married his beloved wife Nancy (Huggard) in 1967 at the Cathedral of St. Patrick.

Robert worked as an auditor for the State of Connecticut until his retirement in 1992.

He enjoyed Westerns, stamp and coin collecting, researching ancestry, had a sharp wit and great sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, a special nephew, Brian Huggard with whom Bob was most comfortable holding his man to man talks, and several nieces and nephews along with his dog Molly. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara.

Graveside services with military honors will be held on Wednesday, April 2nd at 1:30pm at St. Joseph Cemetery, 815 Boswell Ave., Norwich, CT. There are no calling hours.

I am Mary Alice Jones Shackelford,eldest daughter of Bill and Talitha Jones and cousin to Bobby. Though I haven't had any contact of Bobby and Barbara since childhood, it has always been my desire to reestablish contact but I waited too late. Five of my siblings Paul, Joann, Charles and Katie still reside in Oklahoma and Jenette, the next youngest died recently. I heard occasioally about you from James and Wynona Bartlett. Bob was a very kind & considerate man. He never complained & was always interested in how others were doing. He had a great sense of humor & was always in a good mood. The world lost a very genuine & caring man. We will miss you!!
