Robert was born in Norwich on July 9th, 1936, the son of Norval and Mildred (Thayer) Shoales. He grew up in Norwich and graduated from the Norwich City Schools.
Robert would later receive his master’s degree in occupational therapy from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and then his master’s degree in Psychology from New York University. He became an occupational therapist and spent the majority of his career working for New York State in and around the New York City area.
Robert was a true “renaissance man;” he was well-educated and loved to read, especially books on world history. He enjoyed camping, traveled throughout much of Europe, and even spent a year living and working in Puerto Rico. He enjoyed the visual arts, and dabbled in painting in oils, pastels, and acrylics himself.
Through his travels, Robert made friends all across the United States. He was truly a joy to be around, and people loved talking with him because he actually listened.
He is survived by several cousins, and many, many friends.
At Robert’s request, no formal funeral services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chenango Arts Council, 27 West Main Street, Norwich, NY, 13815.
