Genevieve "Gene" R. (Claxton) Hubbard

HUBBARD, Genevieve R. (Claxton), 98, of New Pond Village, Walpole and formerly Ocala, Florida, passed peacefully with grace and dignity on May 31. Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey and Pauline Claxton, sister Helen and her former husband, Howard H. Hubbard. She is survived by her four children, Carl Hubbard of Tennessee, Howard Hubbard of Florida, Susan Hubbard of Michigan and Carolyn Donahue of Massachusetts. Gene is additionally survived by 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Genevieve was born in Kansas City, Kansas in 1920. She grew up in depression era and learned lifelong frugality through her experience. She also started corresponding with a pen pal in Switzerland which sparked her interest in philately and world travel. She married at 19 and had 2 boys soon after. It was now the beginning of WWII, and she followed her former husband across the country while he served in the Navy. After WWII, Gene lived in Denver and Los Alamos, New Mexico, where she was a part of the team working on the Atomic Energy Commission. Gene completed her family with 2 girls. Genevieve moved with her family from Washington, D.C. to Paris, France then to Pebble Beach, California and onto the Big Island of Hawaii. The travelling didn’t stop. After a year in Scituate, Massachusetts, she travelled with her family to live in Milan, Italy for 7 years. All along the way, Gene worked in various administrative jobs and, in Italy, taught 4th-6th grades in the International School program. Genevieve returned with her family to Scituate in 1968. She immediately landed a job at General Dynamics and later at Stone & Webster. In retirement, she moved to Ocala, Florida to golf, play Mahjong, enjoy the sun and paint. Gene loved to paint ceramics, watercolor and oil painting. She was self-taught and painted beautifully and prolifically until her eye sight failed at 96. She continued travelling and loved her yearly cruises to the Caribbean. In 2014, she moved to New Pond in Walpole to be closer to family. Genevieve was very proud of her accomplishments in life and family.
