I have known Crissman since his family moved onto Rushley Road in Coventry. He was two or three and I was about nine. When his family visited their Amish relatives in Pennsylvania I got to feed his pet rabbits in the rabbit house in the back yard. He also later had a pet wild bird that he kept uncaged in the Broderick house.
He wore Amish clothes to Baltimore Country Schools. Unfortunately the others boys in our neighborhood bullied him because of his clothing.
He worked as a auto-mechanic at Montegomery Wards for many years.
While is father Frank was awaiting open heart surgery he told Chris to take care of the two women if he did not survive the surgery. And that was what Chris did. The rest of his life was devoted to caring for his Alice who was brain damaged at birth as well as his Mother during her battle with dementia.
He heated their house with a wood stove he installed, as well as putting on a new roof,
and replacing the cedar shingles. Of course, he serviced the van he had bought because it was the easiest for transporting Alice to restaurants, medical appointments, and church. He also serviced the car left to him by his mothers brother.
Thank God that Chris made arrangements for his sisters care at his death. Surely, St Peter welcomed him at the gates of heaven. I am sure few others could have devoted their lives to 24 hour a day care of a handicapped sister. As a neighbor for almost 60 years I got to watch this hero.
