Norman McCrea, 88, of Oakbrook Terrace passed away on January 29, 2019

Son. Brother. Father. Grandfather. Uncle. Cousin. Friend. Hero.

Norman was born on December 26, 1930, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Chicago to Irish immigrants Thomas and Sarah (Harkness). Norm, a first generation American, graduated from Chicago’s Thomas Kelly High School in 1949 where he played varsity basketball for the Trojans. Norm proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951-53. On May 28, 1955 Norm married Joan Steindel in Chicago. Joan preceded him in death on May 7, 2005.

Norm was a member of the Glaziers Union Local 27 working with American Glass and later Service Glass (Harmon Glass) from where he retired as a new construction superintendent in 1995. Norm was also a Chicago Firefighter and proud member of the IAFF Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2, Brotherhood of the Barrel, serving on Engine Company 76 from 1965 until his official retirement in 1993. In retirement, Norm spent winters golfing and enjoying life in Naples, FL until in 2015 when he returned to Illinois.

Norm was a congenial man and there was always a twinkle in his eye when he smiled or told one of his many stories. He enjoyed not only the work of a glazier and firefighter but also the fraternal relationships created amongst his co-workers. Norm was a caring man, to both his family and friends and personally embraced the motto of the CFD “we’re there when you need us,” as Norm was there when you needed him.

His sons; Robert McCrea (Sharon Travis) of Burbank, IL and Daniel McCrea (Kimberlee) of Whitewater, WI; grandsons Austin, Matthew and Peter survive Norm. Norm also leaves behind his dear friend, love and companion, Kathy Baker, who cared and loved him in both sickness and health. His parents and a sister, Dorothy Cramer, preceded Norman in death. Norm also leaves behind his sister-in-law Maxine Butcher; nieces Colleen, Cindy, Lori, Barb, Carrie and Jody; nephews Joel, Jonathan and Thomas and their families; Pam Bravo and her daughters Nicole and Jessica and many cousins.

The family is deeply appreciative of the care provided to Norm by the staff at Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrace.

Norm and his family were our next door neighbors on Archer Ave. Brighton Park, Chicago. His sons grew up with my kids. My late wife and Joan were great friends and good mothers. Norm sometimes repaired a broken window for me. He was a good man.
