Lawrence Lorman

March 1, 1938January 3, 2019

Lawrence Samuel Lorman passed away peacefully at his home in Monmouth Beach, N.J., at the age of 80. His family not only mourns the passing of a loving father, grandfather, uncle, devoted companion and friend, but the world has lost a true music enthusiast. Larry was born in the Bronx, N.Y., on March 1, 1938, and at a very early age was a lover of music. He was an accomplished clarinetist—playing in his high school band, then the Army band. Later in life, he became both an avid singer, performing as a member of a choir and barber shop quartet, and music historian, researching and reconstructing the Great American Songbook. His extensive collection of sheet music dating back to the turn of the century and his most popular Echo request, “Alexa, play Pete Fountain,” belied his passion. A retired chief financial officer of a small, metal trading company, Larry artfully balanced work, service to his community and family. He served as president of his temple for three years, and personally initiated and worked to make a reality the merging of it with another Ocean Township, N.J., temples. He also served on the board of various local nonprofits and volunteered with cancer survivor wellness organizations. He was an ardent tennis player, a late-in-life golfer and a founding member of a “gentleman’s card club,” though the other members will tell you he was a terrible poker player. Larry found love twice in his life. First with his wife Judy, who passed away in 2007 after a 12-year battle with breast cancer, and later with Pam Schneider, who was at his side until the end. Larry is survived by his two sons, Kenneth Lorman (wife Heidi) and Michael Lorman (wife Debbie Meany), two grandchildren, Lindsey and Emma, his brother Peter Lorman, sister Milly Richmond (husband Frank Richmond) and partner Pam Schneider. Services will be held Sunday, January 6, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Temple Torat El in Oakhurst, N.J. Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean, are in charge of arrangements.
