

Marilyn (Newman) Straus, 87, of Maplewood, N.J., formerly of Little Silver, N.J., died on Thursday, Jan. 15, at Winchester Gardens in Maplewood, N.J. Marilyn and her late-husband, Edward lived in Lake Worth, Fla. from 1993 until shortly after his death in 2008. She then moved to Whippany, N.J., before moving to Maplewood. She was born in Jersey City, N.J. and moved to Red Bank with her late-mother Mae Newman in the 1930s. Marilyn and Edward were married during the blizzard of 1947.
Marilyn was always an active member of the community. She was the first woman elected as a member of the board of trustees at Congregation B’nai Israel in Rumson, N.J., served as president of Congregation B’nai Israel’s Sisterhood, and was an officer of Hadassah, a Jewish women’s organization promoting Zionism and Israel.
She was a loving wife, mother, sister-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by her children Steven and Harriet Straus, and Robin Straus-Reiman and Marty Reiman; grandchildren Jacob and Sarah Straus, David Straus, Mitchell Reiman, and Devra Reiman; and great-grandchildren Lillian Straus and Benjamin Straus.
