Mary Deibert is the kindest person I have ever known.  She loved everyone and was good to every person she knew.  Mary and I worked together in the Oceanside School District, and she was the most extraordinary teacher!  She took such good care of her students and all members of the staff.  I have never met anyone as precious as Mary.  She knew how to take care of people.  Mary’s love and goodness were so strong.  I feel very fortunate to have known Mary.  She was a true and loyal friend.   She was always the model of how each of us should live our lives.  My prayers are with Mary’s wonderful, wonderful family.  I will miss Mary every day.

Her name is Mary, but she will always be Mrs. Deibert to me. That is how I was introduced to her 50 years ago at age seven: it had to be God who brought us together because things worked out perfectly. I was a child with special needs due to Cerebral Palsy. I used a wheelchair, so I needed assistance. Another aide just quit, and we took to each other like glue. It was comical to watch Mary do the bump during the disco days. She really enjoyed being around my school friends and they enjoyed her just as much! We were a “a great team”, she would say.

Her daughter, Cathe and I were a few weeks apart in age and we both attended Jefferson Jr. High.  It was nice because we both made the Honor Roll, so Mary saw both of us get our pins at the ceremonies. She was beaming with pride for both of us. As graduation drew closer, my excitement was tempered with a great deal of anxiety and sadness. Our years together were coming to an end & I went I would no longer hear her singing voice about liquid sunshine or those wonderful Gospel hymns! For 11 years, she was a loving presence in my life! It broke my heart!

Mary was almost magical. Her love and faith in God radiated from her. Her joy of life and people were obvious to anyone who met her. My parents had mutual friends when they divorced, and almost everyone chose one side or the other to stand by. Mary, however, remained loved and respected by both of my parents. It was the same in 1985 at our wedding receptions. She and Harold were warmly greeted at both receptions. My husband loved to make her laugh. He would say, “Hi Gorgeous!” Her reaction was something like, “No Barry, I’m an old woman”, as she laughed.  
 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; Mary exemplified these like few people I have known. This is not good-bye. Know that you will always be in my heart, but I will miss you until we meet again, God love! 



When we lived in Pleasanton,  we had just moved in.  Rosie's mom and dad stayed with us for two weeks.  Within days of them leaving my mom and dad show up for a week.  They left and Rosie and I spent the weekend getting rid of all those things that each set of parents had to have.  The small packages of cheese and crackers, foil packets of tuna, just all the stuff that was unique to their existence.  We just sat down when the doorbell rings and it's your mom and dad.  Loved them but really three weeks of visitor and nothing in the house for company.  I opened the door, and they are standing there with a gallon of wine and bags of chip, dips and salsas. It was like a dream come true. We partied late, made breakfast in the morning and they were gone.  Loved it. 


I will also never forget that your mother took Rosie, a screaming new born Jason, and me in with your dad's mother and all of you. She made it work and never once made us feel like it was a burden. She just did!


Your mother was a woman who dedicated her life to the service of others. She never took the lime light. Maybe that's why no one can think of interesting stories about her. What i remember is a giaganticly strong woman who went and did. She didn't ask, she didn't look for approval, she just did. Accept where it came to EWTN, then it was the aggressive passive thing with me. " Oh it such a great program and the stories are so interesting." It will change your life. I know she was convinced I was going to hell so she tried everytime I called to get me to watch it. As soon as I call she would ask if I saw what Father, or brother or sister whoever said or did today. I would ask did they gamble all the church funds, or did Father whoever take off with the organist (she was such a floosie). I would get an "Oh honey" . I do remember when Rosie and I took her to Old Town in San Diego for lunch. We got a carafe of wine and it went down easily. Even your mother was enjoying some, so being the evil nephew, I ordered another. We drove home and your dad walks in to no dinner on the table or even started. Your father asked were the dinner was and your mother giggled like a school girl. She was sloshed. We had to order take out and your father put your mother to bed early. It turns out she kept drinking the wine so I wouldn't get to drunk to drive. Not everything workout the way she planned, but she always had a plan on how she was going to keep everyone safe and on the path to heaven. She was the strongest, most beautiful woman I have ever know. This world is NOT better without her. But everyone who knew her is better for the privilege of of being in her presence. I think I'm still going to hell, but thanks Aunt Maryjane for trying.


Mary was an aide in my room when I first started teaching 28 years ago.  I have never met a more kind and caring person in my life.  She was such a joy to work with and when she retired I missed her dearly.  I occasionally would hear from friends that she was doing well.  I am so sorry to hear that such a great person has left this world.  However, she is in a world now that is meant for her, A kind, caring and compassionate world that she truly believes to be in.  My condolences to her family.  Please know that she changed my life for the better and made me a better person and teacher.
