Doris Marie McCowen

May 24, 1924December 13, 2020

Doris Marie Ryan McCowen, age 96, of Odessa, Texas, passed from this life on December 13, 2020 to be reunited with her husband and love of her life, Lloyd McCowen. Doris was born in Hermleigh, Texas to Jack and Betty Ryan on May 24, 1924. She spent all of her school-aged years there, and eventually met Lloyd in the nearby Snyder area. Doris and Lloyd would soon marry and Lloyd’s service in the United States Army would have them move to different cities before ultimately settling in Odessa, Texas.

Doris spent her life serving God and was a member of the Crescent Park Church of Christ for most of her life. Doris cherished her time with fellow Christians and could be found consistently in the church pew for every service. The only seat in Odessa where she could be found just as reliably was at Ratliff Stadium. She loved MOJO football!

Doris cherished family and that love and appreciation from her was certainly reciprocated. She was affectionately called “Mamaw” by her close family, a name given to her initially by her grandchildren. Her granddaughters would often seek to go to Mamaw’s house when they felt they needed a little extra attention. Doris also loved her extended family, and would rarely miss a McCowen family reunion. Beyond caring for her family, Doris worked hard to create a warm and inviting home. She enjoyed all variations of needlework whether it be sewing, crocheting or doing embroidery work. She was incredible at baking, and her chocolate cake recipe remains a favorite among all the great-grandchildren. She valued time with friends, and in her earlier years, she often spent time at church social events and particularly enjoyed playing 42 with her friends from church.

Doris maintained her independence for most of her 96 years, living on her own all the way up to her last few months of life.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Betty Ryan; the love of her life and husband, Lloyd McCowen; one sister, Ramona Doss; and one brother, Jack Ryan, Jr.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Regina Parrish Alvarado and her husband Joe Alvarado, and Sherry McCowen; grandchildren, Amy Parrish Bobbitt, Abby and her husband Nathan Gann, Alisha and her husband Brandon Smith, and Adison and her husband Phillip Smith. She will be greatly missed by her great-grandchildren, Rodney, McCray, and Brock Gann, Nicholas and Noah Smith, and William Bobbitt II.

Pallbearers will be Joe Alvarado, Nathan Gann, Brandon Smith, Phillip Smith, Rodney Gann, McCray Gann, Brock Gann, Nicholas Smith, Noah Smith, and William Bobbitt II.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Parks Senior Living facility for the compassion, care, and support given to Doris and her family.

Private family services were held at Hillside Memory Garden in Snyder, Texas.
