SL went to be with his Lord and Savior June 15, 2018. He was born September 6, 1928 to Sherman Lee and Maude (Knaup) Craighead on the family peanut farm in Carbon, TX. He attended school in Carbon and was the salutatorian of his high school class of 1945.
SL and Helen (Bennett) were married in 1950 in Carbon and farmed the family farm for several years before moving to Odessa in 1951. SL began a career with Phillips Petroleum that spanned 35 years. SL and Helen had the opportunity to spend several years in Perth, Australia with Phillips Petroleum. They traveled extensively after his retirement in 1986.
He was an active member, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and trustee at Second Baptist Church in Odessa for several decades. SL was also a founding member of what is now Southwest 66 Credit Union and has served many years on the board of directors.
SL is survived by his wife, Helen; son Wayne (Kathy); daughter Debbie Smith (Scot); grandchildren Ben Craighead (Stephanie); Elizabeth Ensey (Joshua); Ryan Smith; great grandchildren Ryder Ensey; Jackson Craighead, and close extended family Debbie McReynolds; sister-in-laws Bardy Tucker and Hazel Collins. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service was Monday, June 18, 2018, 10:00 am at Second Baptist Church 711 E 17th St. Odessa, TX. Visitation was held Sunday, June 17, 2018 from 6-7:30 pm at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Graveside service took place at Murray Memorial Cemetery near Carbon, TX on Tuesday, June 19, 2018.
