Francis L. Hewlett
October 26, 1929 – March 30, 2018
Francis (Frank) LaVone Hewlett was born on October 26, 1929, in Fort Scott, Kansas and passed away on March 30, 2018 at Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas. He was the son of Harold Hewlett and Ethel Carpenter Hewlett.
Frank joined the United States Air Force on October 20, 1948, and served our country for 26 years with many assignments state-side and serving tours of duty in England, Germany, Iceland, The Dominican Republic, The Philippines, South Korea, and Viet Nam. It was in England where Frank met the love of his life, June Rainbow.
Frank and June were married, on March 8, 1952 in England. June passed away on February 19, 2018. The couple raised three children—Gary (Kay Ann) Hewlett of Wamego, Kansas, Lesley (Lee) Holmes of Olathe, and Denise (Chris) Hynes of Belton, Texas. He was the devoted grandfather of grandsons Matt (Jennifer), Nathan (Sara), Josh (Amanda), Alex (Makayla), Zach, granddaughter Kylie (Manuel) and great-grandchildren Emily, Caroline, Kelsie, Kaleb, Leah, Tate, Ashtyn, Kaden, Oliver, Manuelito and Kamila. He is also survived by sister Betty Hewlett Strasburg of Independence, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Roberta Hewlett VanBuskirk, and a brother, Harold Robert (Bob) Hewlett. Frank was the ultimate caretaker of the family. The needs of his loved ones were always on his mind. His wife and family came first. His outlook on life was forever positive despite his or anyone else’s circumstances. He never allowed his own health struggles to affect his optimistic attitude.
Life in the Air Force was a commitment, a calling, sometimes a challenge, as well as a vocation to which Frank dedicated himself. As a military family there were opportunities for world-wide travel and the making of lifelong memories. The many friends Frank and June made while in service to our country were lasting and treasured.
Friends may greet the family on Wednesday, April 4th from 10:00 -11:00 AM at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home, 105 East Loula, Olathe, Kansas 66061, followed by the funeral service at 11:00. Burial will take place immediately following at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, 13901 Blackbob Road, Olathe, Kansas. Memorial contributions are suggested for Aberdeen Village, where Frank spent the last few months of his life. [Checks made payable to Aberdeen Village]. While there, everyone knew Frank and June as a loving couple. Many of the staff at Aberdeen held a very special place in Frank’s heart.
