Mike Johnson

November 7, 1953November 18, 2020

Mike Johnson, 67 of Olathe passed away in his home on November 18, 2020 surrounded by family. He was born in San Francisco to Glen Johnson and Rosemarie Peart. Rosemarie remarried later in life to Robert Kuenzli who became father to Mike ever since.

Mike joined the Navy shortly after high school and proudly served his country while stationed in San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA. Some of Mike's fondest memories outside of his youth and family are from the time he served. Upon completion of his service the family moved back to the West Coast where he joined GTE Telecom (later to become Sprint). Through job transfer the family moved to Olathe in 1986 where they live to this day. Mike retired from Sprint as a Network Engineer in the International Provisioning group.

Before and after retirement what Mike enjoyed most was his family and pets (many of which were his beloved Great Danes). He thoroughly enjoyed family barbeques and gatherings for holidays and special occasions. His hobbies and interests included travel (particularly Hawaii), riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and bantering over politics. He was always fond of anything automobile and fast (especially the Corvette).

Mike's family and friends from across the country and internationally will celebrate a life well lived and wonderful memories from childhood to his retirement years no matter how far separated they were. Mike was particularly proud of his kid's and grandchildren's accomplishments. He was a devoted husband and is survived by his beloved wife Janeen of Olathe for 43 years. Mike also leaves behind a son, Shane Johnson and his wife Jennifer of Spring Hill, KS, a daughter, Stacy Schumaker and her husband Brock of Olathe, KS. Mike also had a soft spot for his grandchildren Madeline and Riley. His father Robert Kuenzli of Salem also feels the loss as well as numerous extended family and friends.

The family will hold a ceremony at Fort Leavenworth where his Navy Service will be recognized with military honors and a color guard. Mike's earthly remains will be interred within the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. Details will be shared in advance for those interested.

In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution in his name to a Veteran or Animal charity/organization. Mike would be honored as he was a proud veteran and lifelong pet owner whom he considered extended members of the family. May his memory live on through your offering.

I have know Mike personally for the past 15 years as we worked together nationally with several others in the beautiful work of helping others Mike didnt get paid for this it came from his great big wonderful heart. we and he especially gave many of our free hours 7 days a week to make sure the people we helped not only got the real truth but also found warm caring people to help guide them through the maze of whatever help they needed. And often times it was Mike who led the charge. Never with negativity just plain old love for your fellow person!! I was lucky to spend even more special time one on one with Michael even though i lived in the Detroit Suburbs and he in Kansas. Just last week i got him on the phone for late BIRTHDAY WISHES We never missed each others special days. Mike made me feel like part of his fabulous family from his wonderful wife and kids to his new pride and joy; GRANDKIDS! And boy did love spending time with them. And I could never miss the latest events surrounding the other love of his his BIGGG Dogs Swiper and Bandit. Mike i love you and always will we are 2 interlocked souls Forver and EVER!

Mike was a great collaborator and a great sense of humor. Working with Mike on different projects created a friendship outside of work, being both of us were ex-military, he in the Navy and I in the Air Force. Mike had kind words for everybody he met. Barbara and I send our condolences to the family. Your memory will live on.

To the Family and Friends of Mike,
Never met Mike personally but have "chatted" with him for years using the internet. He was such a kind soul and always knew just what to say when myself and many others needed a listening ear or good solid advice.
We had some commonality, most of my Family settled in Kansas, I'm a military brat, we were born in 1953 and we both loved our dogs.
Thank-you for your service, Mike.
