Latreva Sumner Gaylord
February 24, 1932 – January 14, 2022
Latreva Sumner Gaylord, 89, of Old Hickory, Tennessee, passed away on January 14, 2022. Mrs. Gaylord was born February 24, 1932 in Lakeland, Florida to parents, James and Erma Sumner. Mrs. Gaylord is described as a “great Mom” and loved her family. She was a petite but mighty woman. She was always as good as her word. One of her hobbies was sewing. She made clothes for her daughters’ Barbie dolls (which they still have today) and sewed clothes for her daughters to wear. Latreva met and married John Gaylord, the absolute love of her life, in Lincoln, Nebraska and were huge Nebraska Cornhusker fans. Eventually, they moved back to Florida, but remained fans of the Cornhuskers. John and Latreva did everything together. With a love to dance, she and John could often be found on the dance floor. As parents, they made every effort to ensure daughters, Tracy and LaNora, had fairy tale childhoods with many family vacations. While living in Florida, it was not uncommon to awaken the girls in the middle of the night so they could drive to the beach to watch the sunrise and enjoy breakfast together. She enjoyed eating out, but was also a great cook and loved to provide candle-lit dinners at home for her family. She was a wonderful homemaker. Latreva and John owned a furniture store in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. They worked side-by-side in the business and she was responsible for bookkeeping. She enjoyed traveling, as well as fashion and jewelry and was always “dressed to the nines”. She also had a great love for music. She came from a musical family with familial ties to professional singers in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame as well as the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Latreva loved Jesus and prayed constantly. She loved to make friends and loved her church, the First Baptist Church of Hermitage. She will be deeply missed. Mrs. Gaylord is preceded in death by her parents, James and Erma Sumner; her loving husband of 49 years John Gaylord; her two brothers Felton Sumner and Curtis Sumner; sister Latrelle Smith and much loved son in law Al Embry. Mrs.Gaylord is survived by her daughters Tracy Embry and LaNora Gaylord; a sister Dohnie Patterson; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.See more See Less
