Mary grew up on Indian Island, a proud member of the Penobscot Indian Nation, one of 4 children and attended Indian Island school. On June 4, 1947 Mary married Henry J. Sockbeson Jr and together they had five children, Henry, Stephanie, Jessica, Kevin and Ursula.
Along with raising her family, Mary worked for various shoe factories in Old Town and the surrounding area and Sylvania in Bangor, ME.
She was happiest when she was at Moosehead Lake and when her family would gather during holidays where she could cook them a wonderful dinner with delicious deserts. In retirement, Mary and Henry enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe and Alaska, and wintered in Florida for many years. Mary will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed by those that she leaves behind.
Mary was predeceased by her loving husband of nearly 60 years, Henry J. Sockbeson Jr., infant daughter Stephanie, daughters Jessica and Ursula, parents; sister Rose Marie and two brothers Francis Tomer Jr and James “Tomahawk” Tomer.
Mary is survived by her two sons Henry J. Sockbeson III and his wife Dee Sockbeson of Stonington, CT; Kevin F. Sockbeson Sr. and his wife Angela of Bradford; grandchildren, Cynthia of Portland, ME, Charles McGregor of Greenfield, Sarah Sockbeson; Hilary Sockbeson and Kevin F. Sockbeson Jr all of Bangor and Henry J. Sockbeson IV and his wife Kaitlyn of Jacksonville FL; numerous great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews. brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws.
Friends and family may visit Thursday December 5, 2019 from 6:30-8:30 pm at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Indian Island where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM Friday. In the spring, Mary will be laid to rest with her parents, siblings and daughters, Jessi and Ursula at the family cemetery on Indian Island.
