Duane was born April 20, 1936, in Omaha, Neb., to Fred and Mary Thurston.
After high school in Omaha, he attended Life Bible College in Los Angeles and then served 4 years in the United States Marine Corp from 1959-1963. Upon discharge from the Marines, Duane returned to Omaha.
Duane married Edna J. Lukens on December 31st, 1964 in a private ceremony at their church.
Duane worked in construction until 1967 when he began working for the United States Post Office. He retired from the USPS in 1996.
Duane was a long time member of Lighthouse on the Hill, Four Square Church, where he proudly served in various service, teaching and leadership roles.
Duane was a devoted family man who enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, being a part of family activities and staying physically fit through running, walking and strength training.
Duane is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary Thurston; granddaughter, Lily Thurston; sisters, Hazel Rowe, and Mary Ellen Hiatt.
Duane is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Edna Thurston; sons, Ricky Thurston and wife Libby, David Thurston and wife Erinn; grandchildren, Megan, Caleb and wife Erica, Logan, Jameson, Khloe; sister, Darlene Lovett; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 8, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Westlawn Hillcrest Funeral Home 5701 Center St. Omaha, NE 68106. A celebration of life will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Westlawn Hillcrest Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Westlawn Hillcrest Memorial Park.
