Gert, as she was affectionately called, was born in Crawfordville, Georgia on December 18, 1926. She was the fourth of five children born to Hilliard and Gussie Byrd Wingfield. The Wingfield family settled in Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York when Gert was about 5 years old.
When she was 17 years old, Gert married John Crosby Hughes. The couple remained firmly together and devoted to one another until John passed away in 2009. They were each other's better half. John and Gertrude had three children: Joan Diane Hughes Daniels (deceased), Jeanette Hughes Arrington, and John Kevin Hughes (deceased). They raised and nurtured their children while living in Amityville, Long Island, New York.
Gert loved her life, family and friends; in fact, a family get together was one of her favorite pastimes. She and John also loved spending their vacation days traveling, visiting numerous countries around the world over the years.
Gert was employed as a practical nurse for many years. After her retirement, the decision was made that she and John live out their final years in Florida and they chose Deltona as their new home.
Gert was loved immensely and she will be greatly missed by those she leaves behind: daughter Jeanette Arrington, granddaughter Michelle Daniels, great grandsons Joseph Smith, Alex Smith and William Mcintyre and a host of nieces, nephews, and other friends, relatives throughout the country.
The family of Gertrude Hughes gratefully acknowledges all acts of kindness expressed to them during this time. Thanks again.
A graveside service will be held Saturday April 28, 2018 2:30 PM at Deltona Memorial Gardens, Orange City, FL.
