ORLEANS – Alvin H. Behrer, Jr. died peacefully on October 15, 2013 at the age of 89. He was born at home in Queens, New York on December 27, 1923, the son of Alvin and Mildred (Hendrickson) Behrer. The family, including his sister, Mary, who predeceased him, moved to Scarsdale, NY when he was three years old. He completed his education graduating from Scarsdale High School in 1941. Al attended Princeton University in New Jersey and graduated in the Class of 1945 after WWII because he joined the Navy and attended flight school in Pensacola, Florida. He served in the Naval Reserves as a Lieutenant for 20 years. After graduating from Princeton, he and a buddy, Frank took a cross-country trip to Oregon and met his future wife, Lois, on a blind date. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past June 26th with their family at their home in Orleans. Al and Lois lived in Edgemont and South Salem New York while raising their family of four and while Al worked for the family company, the Behrer-Nason Plumbing and Heating Supply Company, in White Plains until it was sold in 1970. They moved to Eastham, and owned and operated the Anchorage-on-the-Cove for 15 summers. He also worked at Mattapan Supply Company while owning the cottages. Upon retiring they moved to their current home in Orleans where he enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, puttering around the house, working in his workshop making bird feeders among many things, and helping with many ministries at the Brewster Baptist where they attended since moving to Orleans. They worked tirelessly with the Caring Cupboard which helps to feed those in the community of Brewster for about 20 years. They traveled extensively through the United States and parts of Europe. He lives his wife, Lois, and their four children: Nancy Darragh and her husband, Curtis, of Milford, NH, David Behrer and his wife, Jan, of Bedford, NH, Dorothy Walter and her husband, Richard, of Duxbury, MA, and Cynthia Waple and her husband, Paul, of North Attleboro, MA. Al was also the proud and loving grandfather of nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister’s husband, Doug Fash and his three children, his brother-in-law’s wife, Leah Fletcher, as well as numerous cousins from both sides of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations be sent to the Caring Cupboard at the Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main Street, Brewster, MA 02631. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, October 20th at the Brewster Baptist Church.\\ For online condolences and directions please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
