Beverly Joan Strand

August 10, 1931May 10, 2020

Beverly Joan Nyberg Strand died on Sunday May 10, 2020 in Harwich, MA at the age of 88 years. She was the daughter of Carl Wilfred Nyberg and Doris Cole Nyberg of Braintree, MA. After graduating from Braintree High School, she attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Teaneck, NJ. There she met her future husband, the Rev. Burton D. Strand, with whom she raised their four children, Paul, Kathy, Tina and Stephen. They were married for 48 years until his death in 2004.

The world is not going to be the same without “Bev.” She was a raconteur, an author of endless rhyming couplets usually set to music, and had the ability to talk to strangers as if she had known them her whole life. She knew every nook and cranny of Cape Cod and delighted in finding some out-of-the-way spot where she could stop and just look out at the water.

She had always been a busy pastor’s wife, and absolutely adored children! She was a natural when it came to teaching and interacting with them. In the 1960s and 1970s she founded and directed two successful nursery schools, and then later in life worked in a day center for the elderly on Cape Cod.

All enjoyed her infectious laugh, lunches out, endless summers of fun, eating the best pork roast, finding the best sunset, and her giving the “coziest” hugs. She was kind, thoughtful, caring, and a devoted mother and grandmother. Known for her incredible wit and humor, she was still making her family and friends laugh until the end of her life. She’s left a lasting imprint on everyone who knew her. Her family is at peace knowing that she is finally at rest and watching sunsets with so many of her loved ones, including her beloved Burt.

In addition to Burt, she was predeceased by her parents, a very special stepmother Tyra Alquist Nyberg, her brothers Carl and Jon Nyberg, and her grandson Luke Strand. She is survived by her four children and her five grandchildren - Nathaniel, Tyra, Rebekah, Annika, and Aaron. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Harwich, MA at a later date when gathering for worship is safe. Gifts in memory of Bev can be sent to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 310 Route 137, Harwich, MA 02645 or to any charity you wish.

I spent the first few years of my life with my grandmother during the days on Chickadee. Bev was always a positive memory and I fondly remember times between her and my grandmother Barbara. The two of them have helped me be the person I am today and I count myself lucky to have been included in her life. Sad to hear of her passing.

Deepest sympathy to the Strand family. I knew Bev from the Cape House Shop, Hallmark. She was a joy to talk to. I have often thought about her and prayed for her especially when she lost her husband. May she Rest In Peace 🙏🏼

My condolences to you all. Beverly was a very special friend who I met in 2004 through the Saint Joan of arc exercise class. She was so very outgoing and so much fun to be with. We shared many lunches and dinners and musical events and plays together. I would bring her down to Connecticut for her family gatherings. I would visit with her when she was living at the Victorian in Chatham. She will be greatly missed.

What an honor and privilege to have known her and called her a friend. She and Burt were so very much a part of my life during my staff tenure at St. Peter's. Always supportive of every VBS, Youth program and Sunday school project I every created. She emulated a commitment to teaching children the Gospel. Bev was a part of my daughter's "village" when they were young, she had a hug ready for every child We will always hold her in our hearts. May all the Strands find comfort, peace and hope during this time of loss.
God's peace, Karen

I am so sorry to hear about Bev's passing. When I started attending services at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Bev was one of the first people to make me feel welcome. She was such a lovely lady and loved her children so much. I was able to visit with Bev after she moved into the Victorian in Chatham. I will always cherish our conversations and beautiful smile. My sincerest sympathies to the family.

Beverly was a much loved resident at The Victorian. A quite unique character with her wonderful stories and the amazing ability to make people laugh. I think of her often and the times we spent together talking and laughing in her room. My sincere condolences to the entire Strand family and the greater family at St. Peter's Church.
