Edla Butterworth, Orleans MA, 1933-2020

Edla Butterworth was born on Riverside Drive in New York City in 1933, the eldest child of Timothy Sullivan and Mable Skog Sullivan. Edla was most content when she could call New York home and returned there after growing up in Shrewsbury and Worcester and graduating from Peter Bent Brigham Nursing School in Boston. Those early years in New York City marked her first apartment, her first job at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and her first Thanksgiving with her fiancé Dick Butterworth. Over the years, the City never disappointed – theater, people, Christmastime – it was all wonderful for her and her enthusiasm for what New York had to offer was captivating.

Edla happily anticipated being a mother and approached her role with purpose and dedication, as well as with love. As the prospect of being married and having children materialized, she had quietly passed up a scholarship to continue her BA at Columbia University; this was not an unusual choice for women of her time and she went on to complete her BA at SUNY later in life. Over the years, Edla practiced her craft as a nurse in a most accomplished way – caring for people in pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry, elder care, and special needs; her compassion for others clearly showed that she had chosen the right field.

Edla was always quick to laugh and treasured her friendships. She remarked that a person who had one friend from every period in their life was more fortunate than most; Edla has had friends seemingly too numerous to count. Frequent trips to and from New England ensured close family ties and the Cape was always a significant point on her compass. She will be buried in Orleans next to her husband, Richard.

Edla is survived by her sister, her four children, five grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply. While she will be greatly missed, she will always be present in this world. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com.

I met EDLA in New York in the 1980's. She applied for a nursing position with a pediatric research project named KNOW YOUR BODY. She was perfect with the elementary school children who were screened for cardiovascular risk factors over several years.

After Edla and Dick left New York and KATONA , she and I kept up a correspondence until 1997 when with her urging, my husband and I moved to Cape Cod .
We four had a social life and shared happenings, our families ,mutual friends, book club and all that the Cape could offer. I could never keep up with her walking which she did daily.
I have missed her company these past several years but have the joy of recalling how happy she was to see me when I visited.
May she rest in the peace that was promised by the Prince of Peace for ever.
