Irena (“Irene”) Kurhan (nee Szagala) May 26, 1950 – September 21, 2021 Irene passed away peacefully at home on September 21, 2021, surrounded by family and loved ones at the age of 71 after a courageous 2-year battle with cancer. Irene never stopped fighting, as she was determined to stay strong and demonstrate what inner strength and bravery truly look like for those she loved.

Those who knew and loved Irene will remember her as a kind and gentle woman with the warmest of hearts and a smile that could light up any room. Throughout her life, Irene’s constant selflessness, kindness, patience, understanding, and integrity were an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Irene will be greatly missed and remembered forever with love by her husband of 50 years Bohdan; by children Stephanie (Rob), Mike (Denise) and Mark (Erica); by grandchildren Jesse, Nathan, Travis; by brothers Walter (Irene), Roman (Patricia); and by her mother Anna Szagala.

Irene’s most treasured moments consisted of time spent with those she loved: her husband, her beloved family, and her countless friends. With her cherished husband Bohdan, they established roots in Oshawa where they raised their 3 children and were active volunteers within the local Ukrainian community. When away from home, quality time was often spent at their trailer in Madoc where they enjoyed the community and a tranquil view of the lake. Irene was a constant source of inspiration to her 3 children, instilling strong morals, values, and a sense of community/culture throughout their lives. Irene absolutely adored her three grandchildren who couldn’t wait to spend time with their beloved “Baba”. She was always willing to provide support and lend a helping hand.

Irene is leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, and memories. Her joy of life has left each of us better off for having known her and serves as inspiration to us all to live each day to the fullest.

Ukrainian Catholic Womens' League Canada, St. George the Great Martyr Parish, Branch 2 extend our deepest condolences to Bohdan, Michael, Stephanie, Mark, mother Anna, brothers Walter and Roman and the entire Kurhan and Szagala families.
Irene was a very active prolific member of Branch 2 for over 40 years. She was always graciously helping with Fist Communions, Praznyks, St. Nicholas concerts and many many other church and hall functions. Tuesdays she would help make perohy. At eleven o'clock a.m. the ladies would call out, "Irene did you call your mother? It's time for her pills."
Irene was a kind, gentle, devoted woman. Her first priority was her family followed by her love of God and her church. Your legacy will live on. Thank you God
for allowing our sister Irene to share our lives.
May God's peace be with you dear friend. Your sisters will pray for you.
