Alan E. “Al” Oppenhuizen, born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away in Monterey. He attended Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids. Following graduation from high school in Del Rey Beach, Florida, Al studied at the University of Denver, received his BA degree in comparative literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his MA degree in French from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Al served three years in the US Army. He settled in beautiful California in 1965 and has lived locally for over fifty years. Al was a foreign language teacher at Carmel Middle School and Carmel High School in a career spanning thirty-five years.
Al thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years. He took pleasure in singing, both as a soloist and with an ensemble. Al attended Harbor Chapel and participated in the Men’s Bible Study group.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Harbor Chapel Community Church, 620 Dolan Rd., Moss Landing, CA, 95039. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.
