Irene Helen Starr April 7, 1921 - November 18, 2000

Irene Helen Starr, age 99, of Melbourne, FL, passed away Wednesday morning, November 18, 2020.

She was born April 7, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of the late Dorothy May Starr. Irene was preceded in death by her grandparents, Walter and Alice Hall; sister, Marie Carleton and brother-in-law, Charles Carleton; brother, Walter "Bud" Starr (WWII Veteran) and sister-in-law, Clara Starr; nephews, James Carleton (Vietnam War Veteran) and Kenneth Starr; great-nephew, Matthew Starr; and lifelong dear friend, Gertrude “Gert” McGee.

Irene is survived by three nieces and one nephew, and their spouses, Joyce Zoellner (Albert), Thomas Starr (Kathleen), Barbara McLean (Patrick), and Katherine Smith (Tony); one niece-in-law, Carol Carleton; 3 great nieces and 6 great nephews, Christine Utter, James Zoellner, Patrick Carleton, Martha Sampier, Brian Starr, Sarah Urquidi , Robert Starr, Michael Starr, and Matthew Smith; a dear loving friend, Terri Cervantes; and several great-great nieces and nephews.

Irene was born in Detroit. She became a successful business executive and had a flourishing career at Michigan Bell from 1941 until her retirement. Irene was also a gifted athlete. She played softball, bowled, golfed (she even got a hole-in-one!), and was an avid fisherman. During the "Golden Years", she was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. She frequently attended the traditional Thanksgiving Day Lions vs Packers football game after the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade. In the 1980s, she retired to Barefoot Bay, Florida. Irene was a favorite aunt among her great nieces and nephews and loved to teach them how to fish and golf, two of her favorite pastimes in retirement. She also loved her many dogs, Pugsy, Cheetah, and Frieda, just to name a few. Along with her siblings and their spouses, she is part of the "Greatest Generation." She was a devoted aunt and loving friend who could never be replaced. An awesome person who leaves an amazing legacy!

A small gathering will be held at noon on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at Fountainhead Funeral Home in Palm Bay, FL. Burial will follow.

Only an aunt can give hugs like a mother, keep secrets like a sister, and share love like a friend. She was the best!

IRENE WAS PART OF MY GROWING UP YEARS.
For several years Irene and Aunt Gert
Would take Joice, my sister Kathy and I to the Annual Michigan Bell Day on Boblo. What fun memories of the boat ride and all day at the amusement park!

Irene was at a lot of our gamily

Irene and I had so many great times together over the last 20 years. Two road trips together to Michigan and many shopping trips! I still have her little Chihuahua Mindy who is doing well and has managed to lose some weight over the last 4 years. Irene you will always be in my heart, I'll miss you always until we can meet again. The most wonderful person I have ever met.
