Margaret was born August 16, 1931, in Crosby, Mississippi, a daughter of the late Thomas Houston Nettles, Sr. and Fannie Carter Nettles. She was a graduate of Southwest Mississippi Junior College in Summit.
Margaret enjoyed a lengthy career within the state political realm, serving as the executive secretary for Gov. Cliff Finch, and later for the State Senate Office. She dedicated her working years to government and politics, and worked the voter polls consistently for many years. Margaret’s friendly, helpful demeanor and slightly flirty approach served her well over the years as she encountered many different people and personalities in the quick paced parliamentary field.
Margaret was also very involved in organizations that supported her husband’s career. She served with the Air Force Association and various committees for the Air National Guard.
Although her career was important, Margaret’s family came first in her life. She was a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, and no matter how busy she was, she always made their needs her top priority.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Charles B. Shive, Jr.; daughters, Charlene Shive Saucier, and Cindi Shive McKinley; brother, Thomas “Mickey” Nettles, Jr.; and sister, Frances Nettles Smith.
Survivors include son, Charles “Chuck” Shive, III; daughter, Monica Shive Caldwell; grandchildren, Brandye Atkinson, Robert “Berto” Caldwell (Samantha), Kelly Saucier, Melissa Atkinson (Ryan), and Melody Galloway; 8 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
